The Nile in Sudan
This is an image of the Nile river flowing through the desert in northern Sudan (18.8°N, 30.7°E), near Al Goled. The darker green areas along the river are smallholder agricultural fields, while the bigger, regularly shaped and brighter green areas are larger irrigated productions.
The image was captured by the Landsat 8 satellite on December 24th, 2015. What you're seeing is a false color visualization, which I generated using the shortwave infrared band (red channel), near infrared band (green channel), and blue band (blue channel).
Using wavelength in the infrared part of the spectrum enhances land cover features that would not be as evident in the visible channels (i.e. red, green, blue).
Most of the processing is done using Google Earth Engine, to which I added some color balancing with Adobe Lightroom.
