Asian short-clawed otter

There are now 2 of these beautiful otters living at the WWT at Washington, Tyne & Wear, as part of a breeding programme. There are currently 2 brothers and will have females introduced next year.

I always have mixed feelings with captive animals....but these have a fantastic area to live, are very active and seem a happy, cheeky pair.

Asian short-clawed otters Rod and Musa are two of our most popular residents, entertaining visitors of all ages with their outgoing nature and playful antics.

The cheeky brothers can regularly be seen going for a swim in their ‘paddy field’, rolling around in mud, juggling pebbles on their tummies and greeting their adoring public with squeaky cries.

Join us for daily commentated feeds at 11am and 3pm, when our expert wardens can tell you more about these fascinating mustelids (which translates as ‘smelly animals’!).

Rod and Musa were born to parents Ned and Thai on 3 October 2009, at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s (WWT) centre in Martin Mere, Lancashire. Asian short-clawed otters are the smallest of all 13 species of otter and a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List.
