Moonlit mt.st.helens crater
This was what it looks like standing on the crater rim of mt.st.helens, a volcano in Washington state that erupted in 1980, well before sunrise. You can see a giant snow cornice that looks like a human face in this photo and moon was setting right behind it. The entire crater rim was snow covered and it looks absolutely dramatic.
To get to the rim before sunrise, we camped at the trailhead the day before, and started the hike at 1am. We kept a pretty good pace and reached the crater rim at around 5:20am. Once we got to the rim and stopped moving, we instantly felt very cold. Everyone started to put on more layers and we still had 90 minutes to wait for sunrise.
This photo was taken during that long wait when the entire crater was lit by the moon light. I feel this is a very unique scene to capture and happy to share with you.
