On fire
This was the best moment I had during summer months when my friends and I were filling our weekends with backpacking trips, and it happened so unexpectedly after an arduous journey.
This place was very deep in Alpine Lake Wilderness in Washington State and it is about 13 miles one way with 4500 feet elevation gain from the nearest trailhead. We went on this trip on a hot summer day when heat wave was hitting the state. The day started with thick overhanging fog which blocked the sky and every step we climbed in the forest was a torture. We were sweating so heavily that our clothes all got socked and gradually as we broke out of tree line, fogs started to dissipate, but it also means the mid day sun could not only directly shine on us but also reflect its light from the rocks we had to scramble on the last stretch. We were all like totally baked by the time we got to the lake.
After setting up camp, we got to the shore and found a swarm of mosquitoes there non stop. We had our bug net and long sleeve on, and even had bug repellent sprayed, but they almost were doing nothing to stop mosquitoes at this point and I counted like 30 bites the day after I got home.
Well, it sounds very miserable but as sunset approached, the distant mountains started to reveal themselves from the fog and their reflection and color were so perfect. This is such a reward for all the hard work we have put into to get here.
