1972 Aloha Airlines Boeing 737-297

Aloha Airlines Boeing 737-297

N73712 (LN 163, MSN 20210) named "King Kahekili".

Delivered new to Aloha Airlines in May 1969. It was retired shortly after the Aloha Flight 243 accident on April 28, 1988. Upon subsequent investigation of older airframes in the fleet, this aircraft was determined to be corroded beyond economical repair. It had spent its entire service life operating in the Hawaiian Islands. By April 1988 it had accumulated 33,676 flight hours in 90,051 cycles -- earning it the title of the highest-recorded number of flight cycles of any 737 in the world at the time. It was removed from service and sold for scrap in July 1988.

The photo shows one of the earlier versions of the "Funbird" livery of the 1960s and '70s. Plain text "ALOHA AIRLINES" titles on the front half of the fuselage.

Scanned from an original 35mm Kodak Kodachrome slide in my collection. Dated June 1972.
