1970 Delta Air Lines DC-9-32 Cockpit
McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 N3317L (LN 119, MSN 47026)
Delivered new to Delta Air Lines 14-JUN-1967 with JT8D-7 engines and fitted with an aft Ventral Stairs.
This aircraft eventually flew for Allegheny Airlines > USAir > US Airways. Records indicate it was broken up in 2001 @ MHV
The photo was taken in April 1970 when the aircraft was just under three years old. I consider this photo very rare, since it is in color, exceptionally clear, and depicts an original, intact flight deck of the DC-9 in the 1970s. Many photos of DC-9 cockpits you’ll find today depict all sorts of retrofits to comply with later FAA requirements such as TCAS, EGPWS, and other technological enhancements/upgrades (ACARS, GPS).
Scanned from my collection: an original 35mm Kodak Ektachrome slide by Don Decherd (Zanesville, OH). Dated April 1970, Location: Columbus, OH.
