Charred Longleaf Pine

A longleaf pine still charred from a prescribed burn that happened April 1st of last year in Carolina Beach State Park. Longleaf pine savannas need a low intensity ground fire roughly every three to five years to kill the species that grow faster than the longleaf pine and end up blocking the light that the longleaf needs to grow. Species like the wiregrass, seen in the background, need the fires to bloom flowers to release pollen into the air. Some places like Carolina Beach State Park do a prescribed burn every so many years to keep these longleaf pine savannas healthy and to preserve an area that spanned from Texas to Virginia.
