Beyond Yard Limits
Out of all the days I pick to go and visit Pan Am's District 3, I happened to get lucky and catch a glimpse of an occurrence that doesn't happen all too often during this time of year. With daylight savings shortening a good amount of time for potential sunlight, it makes it quite difficult for buffs and railfans to capture late-afternoon trains in daylight. Somehow, the crew of this day's 23K was on duty at 1400 in AY (Ayer), giving us some good shots of the SD60E's in light (or at least what we had of it). Usually these guys will be rolling out of Ayer yard anywhere between 5-8 PM, which gives phots complete darkness and increases the difficulty of snapping a decent shot of the westbound intermodal, destined for Chicago, IL.
23K seen here, slowly rolls out of Ayer yard, having it's whole train clear yard limits before resuming track speed. On point, is a rebuilt SD60E, followed by another rebuilt locomotive (AC44C6M) which was sporting a Nathan P5 airhorn, and was sandwiched between another SD60E in MU mode, trailing behind the first 2 locomotives.
