Honey Bees
This honey bee is from the apiary on UNCW's campus. This female worker bee came back to the hive with pollen packed onto her hind legs for the other female worker bees to take off of her. This spot on her hind legs is called the corbicula. When they come back to the hive they do a little waggle dance to alert the other bees that they need to be unloaded. Once the pollen has been removed, the female worker bee flies out once again to collect more pollen. One female worker bee alone can average up to fifteen flights per day, as long as 30 minutes to 2 hours each flight. Meanwhile, the female worker bees who removed the pollen from her, take the pollen and pack it into cells to be stored for later. Honeybees use this pollen mixed with nectar to feed larva in the hive. Pollen can also be collected from the hive from beekeepers and sold as a source high in protein. Pollen is also a very popular health supplement.
