Tamus communis (Black Bryony) - comparison of male and female flowers

Male and female flowers are carried on separate plants; male flowers are carried on erect spikes containing several flowers while female flowers are carried on short stalks directly off the main stem. A hand lens is a useful tool since flowers of both sexes are only about 4mm across.

Photographed 03 June 2009.
