Mammoet Heavy Haul.

TROJAN 8870 ballast tractors which are without doubt “The” next generation tractors in the heavylift industry! Produced in the UK, the most significant feature of the Trojan is its unique ability to link with multiple tractor units in a command and drone convoy. Linked mechanically by drawbars and/or “A” frames as required, by air and by the Electronic Controller Area Network Bus System which significantly reduces the amount of vehicle electrical wiring, relays and switches. The vehicle’s Electronic Control Units are constantly monitored and the command vehicle controls all vehicles in the convoy with no limit to the number of vehicles in convoy. Steering, electrics, engine and transmission output are synchronised by computer on all units thus providing matched gear, rpm and torque. Similarly vehicle braking, engine compression braking and transmission retardation is controlled identically.

Trojan’s design weight is 72,000kg but will nominally run as a 48,000kg ballast tractor. The truck is powered by a Volvo Penta TAD1662VE in-line six cylinder Turbo intercooled engine meeting Euro 5 emission standards coupled to an Allison M6620AR fully automatic 6 speed gearbox, integral torque converor, PTO and retarder. Auxiliiary transmission is provided by a Kessler VG2500, 2 speed transfer case giving built in torque proportioning - one third to the two front axles and two thirds to the rear two axles thus providing ratios: Low range 2.07:1 High range 1.03:1. The front suspension comprises Dana twin steer bevel hub reduction with inter axle and cross axle diff locks suspended on slipper ended semi elliptical parabolic leaf springs and heavy duty hydraulic telescopic dampers. Rear axles are Kessler tandem, spiral bevel, hub reduction with pneumatic inter axle and cross lockable differentials suspended on Hendrickson manufactured 48t 6 rod twin high articulation semi elliptic multi leaf springs, which are trunnion mounted. Braking is an all axle dual circuit ABS S cam drum type with emergency spring braking. Parking brakes operate on all axles. The system is operated by compressed air produced by a hydraulically controlled high output auxiliary compressor with heated air dryer to service and secondary reservoirs. Front tyres are Michelin XZL24R21 on/off road singles with rear twins being DoubleCoin 1400R25.
