Die Spitzhacke
Zu den bekanntesten künstlerischen Verfahren Claes Oldenburgs gehört die Verfremdung von Alltagsgegenständen durch Maßstabvergrößerung und Materialveränderung. Als daher der Künstler während der Vorbereitungen zur documenta 7 an einer Baustelle eine Spitzhacke entdeckte, regte ihn das Gerät zur Überdimensionierung an: ein inzwischen fast archaisches Handwerkszeug mit engerem Bezug zur Wiederaufbauzeit Kassels als zur aktuellen technisierten Arbeitswelt. In dieser ironisch-pathetischen Großgeste wird die ursprünglich auf Provokation angelegte Pop Art erzählerisch.
Die Plastik schreibt sich mit Anekdotischem in Stadtgeschichte und -topografie ein: Der idyllische, wie zufällig wirkende Standort am Fluss markiert den Punkt, an dem die verlängerte Achse der Wilhelmshöher Allee auf das Fulda-Ufer trifft. Und so verbreitet der Künstler den Mythos, das monumentale Werkzeug könnte von Herkules, dem arbeitsamen antiken Halbgott, anstelle seiner Keule aus der Höhe des Bergparks über die Stadt geschleudert und dort, auf ihn selbst zurückweisend, steckengeblieben sein.

One of Claes Oldenburg's most famous artistic processes is the alienation of everyday objects through scale-up and material change. Therefore, when the artist discovered a pickaxe at a construction site during the preparations for documenta 7, the device stimulated him to oversize it: a by now almost archaic toolkit with a closer connection to the reconstruction time of Kassel than to the current technological world of work. In this ironic and pathetic gesture, Pop Art, originally based on provocation, becomes narrative.
The sculpture is anecdotal in urban history and topography: The idyllic, seemingly random location on the river marks the point where the extended axis of Wilhelmshöher Allee meets the Fulda bank. And so the artist spreads the myth that the monumental tool could have been hurled over the city by Hercules, the industrious antique demi-god, instead of his club from the height of the mountain park, where he had become stuck, rejecting himself.
