Cubs 6 - Highlight

For this image, I also utilized the polygonal select tool to ensure I sectioned off different editing techniques. The first thing I wanted to do was ensure the colors of the Cubbie Blue were highlighted. Thus, by selecting all of the trims, the collar, sleeves, and the helmet of the famous of Hall of Famer Billy Williams, I amplified the hue and emphasized heavy blue tones in the coloring. If you look at the bat, remnants of the natural lighting exist on the left and a reflection of the blue sky highlights the right.

In addition, I conducted a similar process for the Cubs patch that is placed on his left breast with an emphasis on red coloring. Moreover, in order to put further importance on the depth and shape of the statue, I decided to keep its natural color with the help of the sunlight while desaturating the background to a black and white with increased input levels and a slight blur to achieve a greater contrast.

For this edited version, I wanted to enhance the ability for the viewer to identify and have a better sense of honor for “Sweet Swinging” Billy Williams. There are several major elements at work to make this an artistic photo. For one, the upward angle coupled with the natural lighting and the vivid Cubs colors on the uniform facilitates a powerful view of the statue. In turn, the viewer is rewarded with a better distinction of where/who this might be. Furthermore, the enhanced version of a black and white background modification as described above allows for complete focus on the statue while still maintaining the overall integrity of the photo and thus, lending credence to the potential of the original image/intention.
