Tharros ancient town, Sardinia
A nuragic settlement probably existed here in the Bronze Age (nuragic presence near the tophet area, submerged wall of 1200 BC)). The town was founded by Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. Until its abandonment in the 10th century Tharros was inhabited, by Phoenicians, then Carthaginians and then Romans. The town was the capital of the medieval Giudicato of Arborea, a Roman/Byzantine relict state from the 9th century until 1070 when Orzocorre I of Arborea relocated to Oristano under pressure of Saracen raiders.
