Questo scenario maestoso è stato teatro di una delle più incredibili battaglie della storia dell'umanità.

 

Il 23 maggio 1915 il Regno d'Italia dichiara guerra all'Impero Austro-Ungarico. L’esercito italiano occupa Cortina, interrompendo quattro secoli d’appartenenza all’impero asburgico. Le truppe austro-ungariche si ritirano sul Lagazuoi per difendere la Val Badia e la Pusteria. Le trincee dei due eserciti contrapposti si snodano lungo i crinali.

 

Da quel momento le montagne dell’area Lagazuoi - 5 Torri diventano teatro di una guerra incredibile combattuta ad alta quota. Per svariati mesi austriaci e italiani si daranno battaglia a 20 gradi sotto zero, a suon di assalti alla baionetta, ferrate improvvisate e lunghi attraversamenti di gallerie pericolosamente instabili scavate nella dolomite.

 

Oggi è il regno dei corvi, che volteggiano nell'aria leggeri a quasi 3000 mt.; sotto di loro tre musei di guerra nati dalla collaborazione tra Austria e Italia.

5 Torri and Falzarego Passage viewed from lagazuoi Mountain

 

This overwhelming view has once been the set for one of the most gruesome battles in the history of mankind

 

On May 23rd 1915 the Italian Kingdom declared war to the Austrian- Hungarian Empire. The Italian army invade Cortina, after four centuries of the city belonging to the Hapsburg empire. The Austrian-Hungarian troops withdraw on Lagazuoi Mountain to try and defend Badia Valley and Pusteria. the two Army's trenches spread across the ridges

 

From that moment the Lagazuoi - 5 Torri became the set of a violent "high altitude" war. For several months Austrian and Italians would fight at -20° with all available means: bayonet charging, sudden ambushing, dangerous and lengthy crossing of unstable tunnels dug in the dolomite.

 

Today this is crow's kingdom, they twirl light in the sky at almost 3000 mt height. Underneath three War museums born from the cooperation between Austria and Italy.
