First day: Cusco, bicycling, rafting, and walking
We will pick you up from your hotel around 6:00 am and pass through the Sacred Valley of Incas Past for the beautiful scenery and small towns of the Chinchero region: Urumbamba and Ollantaytambo. And the grand heroes that forged an independent Peru we will travel, in transportation, through the APU (God of the Mountains), Wak'ay Wilka now known as Veronica Mountain to the pass 4330 meters above sea level. From there we will descend 55 kilometers on bicycles, accompanied by a professional guide and support bus, for approximately 2.5 hours to the archaeological site of Huamanmarca. On the journey, we will observe mountain peaks, rainforests, flowing rivers tea, banana, and passionflower farms, and gorgeous views. After Huamanmarca, we continue by bus to Santa Maria to enjoy a delicious Peruvian lunch typical to the local area. After lunch, we head off to our second activity, rafting down the Wilkamayu River (Sacred River of the Incas) in class III – IV rapids with professional guides in catamaran style rafts and kayaks. We will return to Santa Maria in private transportation and walk approximately one hour to a working local family farm, where we will be spending the first night.
Second day: Walking on the Inca Trail and the hot springs of Santa Teresa
Wake up around 7:00 am to a typical Peruvian breakfast at the farm before leaving for our breathtaking walk through the mountains of Vilcanota Valley. Following the same path that the Incas used for transporting the sacred coca leaves from the surrounding coca plantations. Along the way, we will see gorgeous views from high up in the valley and walk past plantations that cultivate coca, pineapple, mango, mandarin, oranges, pacay, soursop, avocado, papayas, and other local fruits. Along the walk, we can sample many of these overabundant delicacies, depending on which is in season. We stop for a rest in the middle of the day and have lunch at another local family's home before continuing on to cross a suspension bridge high above the river. After the spectacular views of the bridge, we finally arrive at the hot springs of Cocalmayo, one of the best hot springs in Peru. We finish off the day in Santa Teresa, a small town on the path to Machupicchu, where we will eat dinner and spend the night.
Third day: Zipline and walk to Machupicchu
On the third day, we wake up around 7:00 am for breakfast and start the high flying adventure. After a short talk with the professional zipline and canopy guides and outfitting with high quality Petzl gear, we leave for the quick ride to the six zipline. After this thrilling activity, private transportation will take us through the hydroelectric plant and into the entrance of the archeological park of Machupicchu. After we disembark, we will begin walking through the ancient Incan pathway that the original explorers used to find the lost city of the Incas and where now the railway to Machupicchu passes through. This is a light and easy walk, upon which we will encounter many of the diverse and beautiful birds and flowers of the rainforest, such as the cock-of-the-rock, hummingbirds, butterflies, orchids, ferns, bromeliads, begonias, and much more. We arrive at the city just outside of Machupicchu, Aguas Calientes, around 3:30 pm and have dinner and sleep in a nice hotel (private bathrooms and wifi).
Fourth (and best) day: Macchupicchu
On the final day, we begin our trek to Macchupicchu very early in the morning, allowing us to enjoy see the sunrise at the ruins, take some truly marvellous photographs, and enjoy a lack of crowds. We wake up around 4:00 am to start walking the steps, using our headlamps or flashlights. The climb will take approximately 1.5 hours and a total of 1876 stairs and 1.7 km and is the hardest part of the entire trip. Once at the top, we will stop to enjoy a provided refreshment and enjoy the majesty of the lost city at the top of the mountain. After the short rest, we enter the sanctuary of Machupicchu and the guide will explain all of the details of the fascinating history and lives of the ancient Peruvians that inhabited this place.
