Lord Hutton, a law lord, who was to lead the Inquiry insisted in his opening statement that he was in charge, and he alone would decide what matters were relevant. Lord Hutton was assigned to lead the Inquiry into Kelly's death by Lord Falconer of Thoroton, secretary of state for constitutional affairs who, coincidentally, was Blair's former flatmate.
Falconer, was nicknamed by the Conservative Party as one of "Tony's Cronies".
