A rather ornate set of six dress shirt buttons for black- or white-tie given as a gift to my grandfather in April 1914.
He was from a generation in which it was very fashionable to dress up formally. Even the small leather case containing the buttons is a work of art in itself.
Today, the scruffier the better, ripped clothing being very fashionable. Formal wear will not go away but maybe it will become more popular and fashionable again in the future?
