Each year in late autumn, the trumpeter swans return to the flooded farm field. I was so happy to see them return again...especially weeks earlier than last year!
Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) are large migratory birds, considered the largest native North American bird and the largest species of waterfowl on earth. They breed and feed in Alaska during the summer months, moving south to Vancouver Island and the Fraser Valley for the winter, feeding in freshwater and estuarine wetlands and flooded farm fields along the coast.
