A “pretty in pink” wild geranium springing up amidst the fallen autumnal leaves in an open woodland setting near Tod Creek, Gowlland Tod Provincial Park, Vancouver Island, BC.
The Herb-Robert Geranium (Geranium robertianum) is both a winter and a spring annual or bienennial. It is a low-growing plant that is hairy and shallowly rooted, its leaves have a pungent smell. Geranium robertianum aka Robert's geranium was introduced from Eurasia and is considered an invasive weed in BC. It inhabits clearings, meadows, grassy openings, and open forests. It is well established in southwest BC down to the Pacific coast to California.
Some people use Herb Robert as a mouthwash or gargle and insect repellent. Additionally, it has various medicinal properties for sore mouth and throat. It can also be applied to the skin for mosquito bites, parasites, herpes, arthritis, and sciatica.
