Be my Shooting Star!
The common shooting star (Dodecatheon meadia) growing in the backyard meadow amongst many other Spring wildflowers under the canopy of Douglas fir and Garry Oak trees. Its nodding purple pink recurved flowers with yellow eyes bloom in mid spring. Central Saanich, Vancouver Island, BC
Its interesting that the petals on these herbaceous plants grow backward and up, away from the reproductive organs of the plant with the stamens thrust out.
The flowers are pollinated by bees, which grab hold of the petals, and gather pollen by vibrating the flowers by buzzing their wings (buzz pollination). Flower color combinations are blue-purple, yellow-orange or pink-red.
