This coastal town, belonging to the historic region of Roussillon, which has managed to keep intact all the calm of the historic city, famous since the time of the Kings of Mallorca, was immortalized by great painters. In the early twentieth century, Henri Matisse and André Derain, came to this town attracted by the light of its fishing port and the colorful houses that immortalized in their canvases. In this town Antonio Machado died in exile and is buried in his old cemetery. From 1949 until his death, there lived the novelist Patrick O'Brian, buried in the new cemetery located in the suburbs.
