the sub-terranean way...

enjoying a hellish ride on the 1. OK I have to say, I do enjoy riding the subway in NYC. I used to love seeing people and their faces. Their eyes and lips were always, to me, like reading a book. But for now that chapter is closed. All that I see now is the back cover. People seated with their heads down starring at their phones while trying to breathe through a mask. I think now of how they achieved hair loss at an early age, or how they could brad long beautiful hair so tight. Or how many breath mints it takes to endure the foulness of mask wearing. Their eyes fixated on their cellphones, never to look up. Muscle memory moves their bodies at selected stops, exiting with zombie like stares, never with any eye contact with others around. I'm at my stop now, looking for one last time. No acknowledgement of my existence. Maybe when I climb up out of the darkness and into the light, just maybe I see a sparkle in someone's eyes.
