The Last Stand of Heroes
Pillbox 127 (ДОТ 127) was a bunker located north of the town of Khodosivka, in Ukraine. It was a pillbox of type "B", meaning that it could withstand 1 hit by a 203mm howitzer, had 2 floors, an anti chemical saferoom, 3 heavy machine gun ports, and 2 handheld machine gun posts to protect the entrance. More broadly, the bunker was a part of the Kiev fortified region (КИУР), which made up a good amount of Stalin's line. The pillbox overlooked a dam/bridge over the river Vita, which was significant as that was the only path directly leading from Khodosivka to the neighboring town of Lesniki- every other way involved crossing swamps, which would slow down the German advance to Kiev. When German forces began their attack on the Kiev fortified region on August 4, 1941, pillbox 127 proved an unexpected thorn in the side of the German advance. Despite being outnumbered and hopelessly doomed, the men defending the bunker did not give up. For almost a whole day, the machine guns of the bunker fired ceaselessly upon the advancing Germans. They only fell silent around midday on August 5th, once German artillery had finally managed to heavily damage the bunker. Some accounts state that the once the Germans soldiers gained entry to the bunker, they were able to capture 5 shell shocked survivors. After the war, the pillbox was partially flooded due to the man made formation of the Khodosivka lake, where pillbox 127 stands to this day
