The Reich's Final Breath

The Reichstag, located in Berlin, was opened in 1894 and inspired by Memorial Hall in Philadelphia. In 1945, during the battle of Berlin, the Reichstag provided a good blockhouse to defend the government quarter of Berlin from the advancing Soviet Army. Most of its windows and doors were bricked up and machine guns were emplaced on its corner towers and above the main entrance. Outside the building, there were entrenched positions for interlocking fields of fire, and two 88mm Flak guns. Additionally, the Zoo tower, 2km away, provided fire support with its 128mm Flak cannons. The building was considered to be the symbol of the enemy by the Red Army, despite it being closed since 1933 after a fire. Before attacking the building, Soviet high command believed there would be upwards of 5000 defenders, when there were only 550 in reality. The Soviets stormed across the Moltke bridge over the Spree at around 0:00 of April 29. By daybreak, the 171st and 150th rifle divisions had gotten to the diplomatic quarter of the government sector. The Germans attempted to counterattack and fired charges on the bridge, partially collapsing it. The 150th rifle division launched an assault on the Reichstag on April 30, but was repelled by fire from the Kroll opera house and the Reichstag itself. The 279th rifle division was ordered to capture the opera house. Upon completion it joined the 150th in storming the Reichstag. After being repelled back and forth several times by fire from the Zoo tower, Soviet soldiers were able to make it to the Reichstag building. Fighting ensued on the inside as Soviet soldiers cleared the building floor by floor. On the morning of May 2, ~100 Germans surrendered, and later the famous photo of soldiers hoisting a flag over the Reichstag was taken. Soviet casualties list 154 killed& 312 wounded. The Germans suffered several hundred killed.
