The endless rails...
During the Boxer Rebellion, the Russian empire invaded Manchuria in hopes of capturing the city of Mukden and turning it into a stronghold. About 100,000 Russian troops participated in the operation, the pretext of which was anti-foreigner sentiments in the local population. The region was protected by Manchu Bannermen (Qing dynasty forces), who were eventually annihilated. The Boxers and various other bandits also took part in some of the fights/skirmishes, targeting railways leading to Mukden in order to hinder troop movement. Eventually the region was conquered, but resistance by bandits never subsided. In the aftermath of the invasion, Russia violated the Boxer Protocol treaty by not withdrawing from Manchuria, which in turn angered Japan, who had their own sights set on the region.
