Ball's Pit - Cumberland Caverns (Higginbotham Cave)
This pit is 38 feet tall and was the site of an infamous and fatal fall back on December 28th, 1950. Donald Ball fell to his death after exploring the cave with 3 friends. After nearly 23 hours he was rescued and taken to Vanderbilt Hospital but his injuries were too severe. He died 3 days later of massive head trauma, a skull fracture, and a blood clot in the brain.
