Heart of Gold...... Made of Metal (Explored) March 12th, 2017

Macro Monday theme: Made of Metal

Iron Pyrites (FeS2)

This is a macro photograph of a formation of iron pyrites nicknamed "Fools Gold" in the shape of a heart.

Iron Pyrites is mostly iron, it has a brass & yellow metallic lustre, as can be seen.

The nickname came from the days of early gold mining when inexperienced miners thought they had struck it rich after finding pyrites as it looks very much like the real thing.

Actually some types of pyrites do contain some gold content, and where you find one the other may be around also!

I found this piece of pyrites myself whilst fossil hunting and thought it was an interesting shape!

HMM everyone!
