9. LEGO model Class 55 speed test

I was interested in the top speed of this model loco, given its original L-motor setup (compared with the doctored motors for DP1); it always seemed a little slow, but I wanted a number. So I set about videoing it traversing a set distance and timing it at the seven speed settings *, and wrote a spreadsheet (next image) to crunch the data.

MOTORS & TRANSMISSION: 2 standard L-motors, each with in-body multiplier gearing in Lego parts, 20T:12T, thereafter unity gearing down to the bogies (trucks). Middle and inner axles are powered, outer axles articulate on pony trucks.

SCALE: Always a difficult one this - the loco is slightly compressed in length, and slightly over-height, compared with the target scale of 1:38. I've gone with a nominal 1:42 and hoped for the best!

* NOTE: Lego's standard infrared Power Functions transmitter system has 7 discrete incremental speeds. I am looking forward to trying the BuWizz control system to see how much more control that will give. Hopefully it will be a lot smoother, but how easy will it be to actually handle and achieve that smoothness?
