Strange Apparitions
Now that I've got Hugo and the good Doctor Phosphorus, I finally have all the major players from one of my all-time favorite Batman runs: Strange Apparitions.
For those of you unfamiliar, Strange Apparitions is a run in Detective Comics back in the 70s by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers, that sees the return of Hugo Strange, who learns of Batman's identity as Bruce Wayne, destroys his relationship with Silver St. Cloud, steals his wealth, then attempts to sell Wayne's identity as Batman in an auction to the highest bidder. Rupert Thorne gets wind of this, and, wishing to learn the identity himself, has Strange tortured and beaten for the information. Strange is murdered by Thorne's henchmen, but takes Batman's secret to the grave. Thorne, the head of city council, declares Batman an outlaw, and sends waves of Henchmen to bring him down, all while hallucinating the ghost of Hugo Strange.
It's a bloody classic, and not only is the main storyline great, but all the misadventures that happen in between are fantastic as well: Doc Phosphorus makes his first appearance, as does Deadshot's new costume, Deadshot himself making his first appearance since the 1950's. Bruce's relationship with Silver St. Cloud I think is one of the better-written relationships in Batman comics, Thorne's conflict with Strange and his own psyche is gripping, and, of course, the run is the home to the greatest Joker story ever told: Laughing Fish.
As for the figs? fairly simple affairs.
Thorne is Mandarin's head and a CMF Bagpiper torso.
Strange is Strange with CMF Scientist arms.
Batman is a juniors Batman
Silver is Ariel's head and Lois's body.
Deadshot has a new, smaller scope.
Joker is Joker, and Doc Phos is Doc Phos.
Let me know what you think, and cheers!
