Quiapo, Manila
This is the church where the life-sized figure of Christ carrying the cross, more commonly known as the "Black Christ/Nazarene" is venerated by thousands of the faithful. A visit to this church any Friday, especially in the afternoon, will show this statement to be true.
It was erected on August 29, 1586 with the help of Santiago de Vera, then Governor General of the Philippine Islands.
The image of Christ venerated in this church, was brought from Mexico about 400 years ago. Within its history, a great fire destroyed the church, but left untouched the beloved image. The remodeling of the Church was largely due to the efforts of the then parish priest of the district during the 1930s.
