The 5000 ton SS Maheno was built at Dumbarton by William Denny & Brothers being launched in June 1905 and serving as an ocean liner flying the flag of the Union Company of New Zealand. She steamed across the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia from 1905 until 1935 and on occasion to Vancouver, Canada. During WW1 she served as HMNZ Hospital Ship No. 1 sailing between Gallipoli, The Mediterranean, the UK and New Zealand returning to The Union Line in November 1918. Upon retirement she was sold as scrap to a Japanese company and was being towed there in July 1935. However during a cyclone, the towing cable failed and with no propellors fitted she drifted ashore on Fraser Island. No new buyers were found and she was left to decay.
