Grand Voilier

Papilio Thoas. King Swallowtail. Grand Voilier, mariposa de los naranjos.

This beautiful butterfly is one of the largest known "tail-bearer", with a wingspan of 100 to 130 mm. Common in central America and Amazon, here in a pacific tropical rain-forest. Shooting it wasn't easy because of the weakness of light and also the butterfly was constantly moving !

It uses to rest on the tall branches of plants excepted in the beginning of sunny afternoons. Fragile, it often damages its wings during its activities, and dies naturally about ten days after emergence. Ephemeral nature of beauty. (Old manual Tamron 70-210 macro zoom)
