Cape Lookout Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters, Cape Lookout National Seashore, NC

A few years ago I decided to research my family history. I didn't know anything about any of my ancestors beyond my grandparents.

One of the things I learned is that my grandmother's grandfather (my 3rd great grandfather in Ancestry lingo) was keeper of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse from 1869-1876.

His daughter, Charlotte Ann Mason Moore, was his assistant keeper from 1872-1875. She is listed as the only female lighthouse keeper for Cape Lookout. Her uniform and other items used in her profession were on display at the lighthouse living quarters when I first visited it in 2016. The display was still there when I visited a few weeks ago.

I was amazed that the the oil can (first whale oil was used, then kerosene) weighed about 45 pounds. It had to be carried over 200 steps at least once per day to light the beam at the top.

The lighthouse is now lit by solar powered LED's, installed in Sept 2017.

I had intended to climb to the top of the lighthouse, as the people at the top shown here, but arrived too late in the afternoon.
