Nikolaifleet, the historical birthplace of the harbor of Hamburg in the year 1188…

The Nikolaifleet used to be the main confluence of the Alster river into the Elbe river. The development of the port of Hamburg began here in 1188, and goods were transhipped here on the waterways to the warehouses up until the 19th century. With the emergence of the Speicherstadt, this part of the port lost its importance. The Nikolaifleet is exposed to the tidal range of the Elbe, so that the water level rises or falls by more than 3 m every 6 hours. Here at the southern end of the Nikolaifleet is the last surviving historical canal section with the typical old Hamburg buildings, the narrow, high canal houses.
