Cries of London

"Apples!", 1952. 220 plywood pieces, 21½ x 28 cm. Random push-fit colorline cut. Cut by Dolly McDougal for the East Anglian Jig-Saw Club.

A print from Vernon de Beauvoir Ward's (1905-1985) well-known 'Cries of London' series, brilliantly cut in the early years of the East Anglian Jig-Saw Club by Dolly McDougal, who ran the library at the time. Many attractive puzzles from this library have emerged recently, produced in the 1950s-1960s by either McDougal or, in later years, by her grandson Andrew Kershaw. There is a rich selection on the Jigasaurus website, and some further information published here earlier on Flickr by dajavous. The puzzles are generally not large, but quite challenging and highly collectable.

As can be seen, the colorline cutting is pervasive, inevitably yielding plenty of fake edge pieces. Pieces are cut with a fine blade, so the fit is perfect. A fun puzzle.

The puzzle came in a cloth bag with a label attached, giving the title, piece count, size, year of origin, and cutter (DMcD). The address of the jigsaw club is given as 112, Gurney Court Road, St. Albans. On the back of the label are some patrons' due date stamps from 1968-1969.
