popular picture puzzle

Woodland pastures, 1930c. 90 plywood pieces, 28½ x 20½ cm. Undulating push-fit grid cut. Tuck's Popular Picture Puzzle, made in England by Raphael Tuck and Sons Ltd.

Raphael Tuck and Sons, Ltd., is justly revered among wooden jigsaw enthusiasts for their superior Zag-Zaw range. But they also produced limited series of smaller jigsaw puzzles with distinctive cut patterns, such as Tippe-Toppe, Big Value, and Jazz. The rarest of these appears to be the Popular Picture Puzzle series, of which we have only two examples in the Jigasaurus. Here is a third one, acquired recently from a fellow BCD-member.

The cut on these Popular Picture Puzzles appears to be similar to that of Big Value and Tippe-Toppe, except that the pieces are larger (in fact, the largest I have seen in any Tuck). The blank is subdivided several times over, yielding 16 segments which are dissected in grid cut fashion. All the cut lines are gently waving. Zag-Zaws often have a similar organization, except that the cut lines may be different and a figural is inserted in the center of each segment.

The picture used for this puzzle is marked Oilette in the bottom left corner, suggesting it was also produced by Tuck as a postcard. The artist is Howard Walford (1864-1950).
