THE CATHEDRAL OF AARHUS..The Votive Ship “Unity”
The Votive Ship “Unity” dates back to 1720. Its true origin is unknown. According to an experienced restorer of votive ships, it was built in Holland. The Russian Tsar, Peter the Great, reigned over huge areas of land. He also wanted to rule the seas. So he ordered warships from Holland, which was a nation of very experienced shipbuilders. Instead of drawings the shipyard made a model that was to be shipped to Russia. On its way to Russia, the ship carrying the model encountered a violent storm off Skagen. The ship was wrecked, but the model drifted ashore almost undamaged. At an auction some fishermen from Aarhus bought the model. They donated it to the Cathedral. 2.65 m long and 3.50 m tall it is the largest votive ship in any Danish church. Ships hanging in churches symbolize man’s “navigation” from cradle to grave.
