Silent Movie Retro Movie Review

Silent Movie is directed by Mel Brooks and came out in 1976. Mel Brooks is one of my favorite directors and this is one of my favorite movies from his catalogue.

Before I saw this movie, I had no idea it was actually a silent movie. Which is a super weird concept during that time. Even in the film, they joke about it saying "a silent movie, in this day and age?". Which is funny that it is self aware like that. It also was successful though, being the third highest grossing of his films after Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.

Very few, if any directors could hold an audience "in this day and age" for an hour and a half like this film did. I was never bored watching this movie, never checked the clock, never took brakes, I watched it from beginning to end and had a great time watching it.

Since it is a silent movie, the film has to rely on slap-stick humor and in this film the slap-stick humor is top notch, it is funny and has the Mel Brooks quirk.

The celebrity "cameos" as them selves are great too, including Burt Reynolds, James Caan, Liza Minnelli, Anne Bancroft, Marcel Marceau, and Paul Newman.

If you haven't seen or even heard of this movie, I definitely recommend you check it out. It may not be for everyone, but I like it a lot. I give Silent Movie an A-.
