Creature from the Black Lagoon Retro Movie Review

This is my first review of a new series of Retro Movie Reviews (RMR). All of my RMRs will be films I like so they will all have higher grades. Retro, in the sense of these reviews, qualify from 1985 and older.

So from my favorite Halloween movies/specials, Creature from the Black Lagoon, is one of them. This film came out in 1954 and used purely practical effects. The suit they had used for 'Gill Man' is great and so iconic, for good reason. Gill Man's growl also is great and freaky, especially for that time.

The underwater scenes in the film are great also and very well shot. They are super suspenseful, with the music and the black and white film.

The location of the film is also great. It all takes place in South America, but most of it in that takes place in the "Black Lagoon". A very secluded area, which Gill Man has control of, he knows the place and has a cave home. Home court advantage as you will, which makes it scarier for the crew.

And Julia Adams iconic performance as Kay Lawrence has cemented the "damsel in distress" or "scream queens" characters.

I give Creature from the Black Lagoon an A.
