Blue Teapot
I lived in Hong Kong 12 years, leaving in the summer of 2014. I knew it was time to go. I was worried that if I didn’t leave soon I would become a permanent fixture like so many of friends
before me - come for a year, stay for a lifetime. Not a bad prospect, to be sure! The lifestyle is the best I’ve ever known and, as a teacher, the respect and salary reflected the tremendous efforts of those in the profession. As a flight hub, Hong Kong affords some of the best travel opportunities in Asia and the nightlife is to be enjoyed regardless of age. I met my husband in Hong Kong and did a significant portion of 'growing up' there, and for this I will be forever grateful. However, the pollution had increased over the years that I was there, as had Beijing’s hold on democratic process in the region; both became reasons why I didn’t want to raise children there.
Given to me as a ‘thank you’ present from a friend, the teapot is a sweet reminder of the Hong Kong life I left behind.
