"Mommy, That horse is wearing zebra pants!" The Mom told her, "It's an Okapi, not a horse."
As I walked up to the Okapi's pen at the zoo, a little girl walked up and saw the Okapi and yelled, "Mommy, that horse is wearing zebra pants!"
The Okapi is the only living relative of the giraffe and is not related to the zebra or horse. It is very rare and shy and was not discovered in the jungles of the Congo until 1900. It has long ears, stripes on its rear and on its front legs. It's tongue is about 14 inches long and is used for pulling leaves from trees like the giraffe does. The Okapi is about 5 to 6 feet high and 7 to 8 feet long. The male can develop small horns (again like a giraffe). According to Wikipedia, "the female only vocalizes when it's ready to breed." Needless to say, Okapi and humans are very different.
