Mount Rocciamelone Summit

Personal Website

Facebook

This is the building located at the height of 3.538 meters above sea level, on the summit of mount Rocciamelone, Val di Susa, Italy.

It consists in a little chapel, open only for special occasions, plus an unguarded single room refuge always available throughout the year. The only risk is winter, when the entire building is usually submerged in ice.

The light that filters through the door is produced by 4 candles (of course there is no electricity).

Don't miss also the frozen stones on the left :-) due to a strong wind below zero everything tended to freeze instantly.

Picture taken on October 17th 2012, after moonset.

I've been looking to take this picture since a long time, it's absolutely basic and till now missing in my set dedicated to this lovely mountain.

Actually in my hard drive I have a previous take, during a night with the moon, which certainly I'll post later... I've just thought to submit this one because moonless nights at this altitude are truly magical. Otherworldly.

In the north-east (right) you can see the Pleiades cluster (or Seven Sisters) just risen on the horizon, while a bit more to the north, slightly above the chapel, is clearly visible part of the Perseus constellation.

The framing had no alternatives because I had a precipice of more than 2.000 meters behind me.

Tendentially I love to think about this photographic genre as a most straight/simple way to take people on a visual journey. Through the documentation of the most unusual, often hidden, true beauty of this world

Also because, guess what... some people even think that it is not possible to see our galaxy with the naked eye during the night! :-))) This makes you smile, and says a lot about how much, in our days, can still be helpful some sort of documentation about facts clearly far from common knowledge.

So the purpose is to offer a visual journey, without aspiring necessarily to "art" (which could be pretentious, often unnecessary) and striving to see beyond the classic "holidays shots" (in the usual sense of the term). It is a search for the middle way, in due respect to places and environmental conditions that otherwise would be indescribable with mere words.
