Contemplating the Milky Way

"It is said that when someone looks at the stars it is as if they wanted to find their own dimension lost in the universe."

(Salvador Dalì)

Self-portrait taken in the middle of the night at 3,000 meters on Mount Thabor, in the upper Vallée Étroite (France), which portrays myself contemplating the heart of the Milky Way (the so-called Great Rift).

Among my photographs, this is perhaps the one that comes closest to what the human eye actually sees, at night, when the moon is absent or set, in a place as far as possible from the light pollution of our cities.

Today's cameras (reflex or mirrorless), when combined with bright lenses, offer amazing performances and have allowed “anyone” to immortalize the starry sky.

The only peculiarity, in my opinion always good to notify, is that the ability of a quality photographic equipment to capture the light at night (working on high ISO, long exposures and almost maximum focal apertures) allows to face a very different reality (more detailed and rich of colors) from that one our eyes have always allowed us to observe.

This must be said and must be well notified, to avoid creating false expectations or misinformation.

It is a fact that most of night photography illustrate a "discovered reality" very different from what an adventurous, trained and well motivated person can observe in person, hiking, perhaps with great sacrifices, to remote places.

It goes without saying that there is no fairer view than the other, but this difference must be kept in mind if the aim is to return the nocturnal idea of a place.

I have been practicing this specific sector for 15 years now, and I have always paid great attention in searching a balance between the human vision and that offered by technology.

Research continues today.
