The Mountain Who Wasn't There

Photo bearing the very same title of an earlier shot of mine taken in October 2010, because it is portraying, in essence, a very similar scene: the shadow of Mount Rocciamelone (3.538 m), Italy, covering at sunset the Viù Valley below. Look to the blue cone visible on the top left of the image.

Hence the title of course, since it seems to see a mountain on the left, but in reality it is just a shadow, so "The Mountain Who Wasn't There".

Here you can see the shot taken in 2010 www.flickr.com/photos/13980928@N03/5120485878/in/photolis...

Comparing the two shots I have to say that perhaps the light captured in 2010 was better, I guess due to the fact that being the shadow slightly to the left it allowed the chain of mountains below to shine a bit more in the sunset.

Nevertheless the photo I am posting now is technically more perfect having been realized with tripod and with a photographic equipment qualitatively far superior. The lakes below, even the river, are more visible. The differences between colors are much better defined as the shades in between, a very important aspect when dealing with such a complex situation of colors and light like this one.

So I say, I will keep both photos... each one tells me something. Certainly the affection I have for the shoot of 2010 remains unchanged, because that moment was the first time I saw this wonderful shadow, so that picture, in itself, even if taken on the fly, for me contains the charm of the "act of discovery".

Instead, the picture of today represents the need to continue to live and document certain emotions, knowing that even if similar will never be the same, maybe it's a homecoming, to what I already know, that made me fall in love.
