King Matthews

Mount Matthews reigns supreme behind the eastern hills of Wellington. The highest peak in the Remutaka Range 941m above sea level.

This is a scene I've been chasing for a few years. Although the Remutakas get a dusting of snow each year, there hasn't been a polar blast which has delivered a thicker snow cover and a dusting to lower levels in about four years (from what I can remember). It used to be more common at least once every winter to see a dusting of snow to the extent seen in this image, or down to a slightly lower elevation.

I can only shoot up to 200mm on my telephoto lens, so this image has been cropped quite a bit. But regardless, I'm stoked to get an image of Mount Matthews in his winter coat.
