Rimu Rakau

An ancient Rimu, standing proud in a remnant of original native forest.

In memory, of a sheep farmer in Wellington back in the 1860s who fenced off 7 hectares of native forest from livestock. Across the Wellington peninsula, a lot of large natives, including Rimu, were felled for the use of timber and to clear land for farming and infrastructure. Once widespread, fewer Rimu stand as the lucky ones.
