First Railway Photo

This was my first ever attempt at photographing a train so I’ve included it here as part of my digital record. What is striking though is the way that so much Victorian railway infrastructure that had been abandoned in the 60s remained completely untouched well into the 80s and sometimes beyond. This was the former Moor Street wharf in Burton and the Class 47 is crossing a bridge over the former Shobnall branch railway, which prior to that was the Bond End canal. The land in the foreground was railway sidings as was where the portal framed structure stands.

A car dealership now occupies this plot and the railway bridge is replaced with a road over bridge, replacing the notoriously low bridge that can be seen to the right in this photo. 18/12/83
