Snapping Turtle 8407
The water in Silver Lake is extremely low due to very warm weather, lack of rain, and construction on a bridge which has opened a dam. When I first saw this turtle I thought he was stranded and in distress. He was pretty much motionless with the periodic lifting of his head above the waterline, and I was concerned he had been there for a while. Turns out distress was not the issue at all. He repositioned himself to be almost in a standing position. After ten minutes or so, a female emerged from underneath him and slowly headed away. He went off in a different direction and I’m pretty sure we made eye contact as he was on his way. FYI, 9 frames a second is foolish when photographing turtles.
