Penyghent at Drax 20251122--091+092

60021 Penyghent is at the head of a train of discharged biomass hoppers on Unloading Line A at Drax Power Station. The first wagon is the gold one, painted to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the power station in 2024.

Taken during a Northern Diesel Photo Charters event organised by Chris Gee, raising money for the Martin House Children's Hospice.

60021 had arrived at Drax at the head of 6E10 10.30 from Liverpool Biomass Terminal, with 69012 on the back from Tuebrook Sidings. It returned to Liverpool the following day as a VSTP 6M51 at 11.51 from Drax.

This was the fourth and final location for the evening. The first shots had the Leyland Atlantean bus parked alongside but, after that was moved further along the road, I tried a few different angles. Unfortunately, when you stood wider, it was very difficult to avoid a bright floodlight dominating the scene and causing major flare - including white streaks - in the top right of the image.

Manipulation notes: A combination of the gathering mist and the bright floodlights meant there was lots of flare in the sky, and it didn't add to the atmosphere. This is a combination of two frames: the background is the frame I took with the lowest exposure, while I took the train and the foreground (road, grass verges, and the track) from a frame where the train was exposed roughly correctly. However, the only way to remove the flare was to completely darken the sky and effectively paint over the white streaks.
